Association of WECS

Association of WECS with International Agencies

WECS has gained a very high profile because of its designation as focal point for research and pilot activities by UNESCAP, ICID, WCD etc. WECS is also working for the following organizations in the capacity of:

  • Member of World Energy Council (WEC) and acting as a secretariat of the WEC-Nepal National Committee
  • Member of the International Commissions on Large Dams(ICOLD) and acting as a secretariat of the (ICOLD) Nepal National Committee.
  • Focal point of BIMSTEC for energy sector.

Support from the External Agencies

The World bank
The World bank has provided loan assistance under the Nepal Irrigation Sector Project for the formulation of Nepal Water Resources strategy and the preparation of the National Water Plan. Presently it is supporting WECS for Institutional and Policy support for improved water management under Irrigation and Water Resources Management Project.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB)
ADB has been providing technical assistance in various country study and research program conducted by WECS including preparation of draft Resettlement Policy. ADB is providing assistance for the forthcoming TA on Bagmati Basin Improvement Project.

Japan International Cooperation agency (JICA)
JICA has provided technical and financial support for conducting studies on Glacier Lake Outburst Flood related studies.

United Nation Development Programme (UNDP)
Research on Economic Viability of Micro Hydropower in Nepal was conducted with the financial assistance of UNDP . In addition, UNDP has provided financial assistance for human resources development through training, seminar, etc. UNDP supported by European Commission for Humanitarian Aid Department has Provided assistance to WECS for Institutional Strengthening and Sensitization of disaster risk reduction under Disaster Risk Reduction Project in Nepal.

WWF Nepal, The Global Conservation Organization
WWF Nepal has been providing assistance for initiation of formulating the Koshi River Basin Management Program (KRMB). The KRMB is piloting integrated River Basin Management approach in managing water and related resources in Koshi River Basin as guided by National Water Plan, 2005.

International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD)
ICIMOD in association with WECS has initiated GLOF assessment and mitigation study of potential dangerous glacier lakes in Nepal.
